Housing Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pig Hutches:

Housing your Guinea pig is as important as choosing him, as a good quality well constructed hutch play's an important roll in his well being.

Points to look for when choosing his Hutch:

Construction should be of good quality exterior ply or planking, make sure there are no gaps between the planks as this could cause a draft in bad weather.

His hutch must be on legs or raised of the ground to avoid damp and insect infestation.

One end of the hutch must have a private sleeping/shelter area. ( In larger breeding hutches this area also serves as the nesting quarters.)

Guinea pigs although smaller than rabbits require as much space as possible as they are runners, and we advise the use of a rabbit hutch for housing, these are at lease 3" deeper than the traditional Guinea pig Hutch.

The doorways must give easy access to all areas of the hutch for cleaning.

The mesh on the wire door should be at least
16g 25 mm x 25 mm (1"x 1") .

The roof  must be covered with waterproof felt and firmly secured.

All timber must be treated with an Animal Safe weather repellent timber treatment.

Guinea Pig Runs:

Construction should be of good quality exterior ply or planking, make sure there are no gaps between the planks as this could cause a draft in bad weather.

All runs should have an area for your Guinea pig to shelter if the weather changes.

Access to the whole area of the run by a good sized well placed door is essential.

Choose a run with sufficient length  for your breed of Guinea pig.

Breeding Quarters:

If you intend breeding your Guinea pigs then choose a large hutch as it will have to house mother and babies for at least six weeks.

If you intend breeding often then a hutch with a larger than normal private section is required.
