FERRET GROOMING:
You should bathe your ferret at least once a month but no more than once a week. Excessive bathing will lose essential oils needed to keep the skin moist. Fill with warm water enough that his feet still touch the bottom. Have ready his shampoo, towel, and a jug to rinse him. Ease him in and get him wet. Let him play for a while. If he's scared make a fuss of him, let him know it's okay.
Never leave your ferret unsupervised in water. Dry your ferret off well with a towel. Ferrets usually go a little nutty after a bath. Running, Jumping and making strange noises is normal for a clean ferret.
Dealing with any odour problems: Deodorant spray is available for any minor problem. Ask the breeder if your pet has been de-scented, in most cases he will not be. You do not have to de-scent your ferret, especially if it has been neutered or spayed. Your ferret will need to have his nails clipped about every three weeks. You can use either nail clippers for cats or humans. Hold his paw then clip. Be careful not to cut his cuticle. That is the pink part that has a vein running through it. Leave about 1/8 inch of the nail past the cuticle.
Check your ferrets Ears each week. This is pretty easy to do just be careful not to poke into the ear canal itself. Use a cotton swab and gently clean the area. If there is reddish brown wax in the ear he may have ear mites and needs to go to your vet for eardrops.
Use a soft brush to groom your ferrets' coat. It's best to start when your ferret is still a kit. This is especially important during the moulting seasons. This will also help in forming a bond between you and your new pet.
You should brush your ferrets teeth with a toothbrush designed for small animals. Pet toothpaste or baking soda works well. Brush a few times a week and have any tartar removed by your vet as needed.

TRAINING YOUR FERRET:
Training is a fun and rewarding experience. You can teach your ferret lots of things and he can teach you too. Since ferrets are always exploring, training should be done several times a day for a few minutes at a time. Make sure you reward him for his achievements with treats and praise.
